Planning your first trip to Tobermory? You’re about to discover why this charming harbour town at the tip of Ontario’s Bruce Peninsula is called the “Caribbean of the North.” With crystal-clear turquoise waters, dramatic limestone cliffs, and some of the most Instagram-worthy natural wonders in Canada, Tobermory has evolved from a quiet fishing village into one of Ontario’s premier vacation destinations.
But here’s the thing about Tobermory: this small town of 4,000 residents welcomes nearly 400,000 visitors each summer. That means planning ahead isn’t just recommended, it’s essential. As the #1 rated motel in Tobermory, we’ve helped thousands of first-time visitors make the most of their trip. This guide shares everything we wish every guest knew before arriving.
Summer (June-September): Peak season brings warm weather, full-service amenities, and that coveted Caribbean-blue water. Expect crowds, higher prices, and the need to book everything months in advance. The weather is reliable, all attractions are open, and the water is warm enough for swimming.
Shoulder Season (May & October): Our secret favorite. You’ll enjoy milder crowds, lower prices, and spectacular scenery. Many attractions remain open, and you can actually find parking without circling for an hour. The fall colors add an extra dimension to the already stunning landscape.
Important Note: Many accommodations in Tobermory, including Blue Bay Motel, operate seasonally from April to October. Plan accordingly and book early for your preferred dates.
Pro Tip from Blue Bay: If you’re flexible, visit in early September. The water is at its warmest, kids are back in school (smaller crowds), and the weather is still gorgeous.
From Toronto or the GTA, it’s approximately four hours north via Highway 400, to Highway 10, and then Highway 6. The drive itself becomes beautifully scenic once you pass Owen Sound, but that final stretch on Highway 6 can feel longer than expected—there’s a reason locals call it “the journey to the end of the peninsula.”
A quick but important tip: fill up your gas tank and grab your road snacks in Owen Sound. Gas prices increase as you head north, options become limited, and this is your last chance to pick up familiar favourites like Tim Hortons or McDonald’s. Tobermory prides itself on locally owned restaurants, which means no chain fast food once you arrive.
Arriving by Ferry:
The MS Chi-Cheemaun car ferry connects Tobermory to Manitoulin Island during the tourist season, offering a spectacular way to arrive or depart. Think wide-open Georgian Bay views, fresh lake air, and a memorable start (or finish) to your Bruce Peninsula adventure.
Let’s address the elephant in the harbour: parking in Tobermory can be frustrating during peak season. Municipal parking rates are $3 per hour or $15 maximum per day, enforced from 9am-6pm between May 15 and September 15. At major attractions like the Grotto, parking passes must be booked weeks or months in advance through Parks Canada.
This is where location becomes your superpower. Blue Bay Motel sits directly on Bay Street in Little Tub Harbour—the heart of Tobermory. You can walk to restaurants, shops, boat tour departures, and the gorgeous harbour boardwalk without moving your car once. We offer free parking for guests.
Many visitors don’t realize that the inconvenience of parking at attractions pales in comparison to the convenience of staying somewhere you don’t need to drive.
The most photographed spot in Ontario requires a timed parking pass from Parks Canada (required May 1 – October 31). These sell out quickly in summer. The Grotto is a stunning sea cave carved into limestone cliffs where you can swim in impossibly blue water.
Booking: Visit the Parks Canada website 30-60 days before your trip Pro Tip: Book your Grotto visit for your departure day. It’s a 20-minute drive from town, so it makes sense to see it as you leave.
Multiple operators offer tours over historic shipwrecks and to Flowerpot Island. These can fill up weeks in advance during peak season.
Departure Location: Right here at Little Tub Harbour—another reason staying at Blue Bay is so convenient.
Part of Fathom Five National Marine Park, this island features unique rock formations shaped like flowerpots. Combined boat tours let you see shipwrecks en route.
Tobermory has two distinct harbours:
Little Tub Harbour (where Blue Bay is located):
This is the bustling heart of town. Restaurants, shops, boat departures, the harbour boardwalk, and the famous rocky shoreline are all here. This is where you want to be.
Big Tub Harbour:
Home to a historic lighthouse and the famous Sweepstakes shipwreck, which is visible from the water by canoe or boat. It’s a beautiful spot for sunset watching and photos, just a short drive or a longer walk from Little Tub
Don’t forget:
Tobermory proudly remains free of chain restaurants. Instead, you’ll find fresh whitefish, locally sourced ingredients, and truly unique dining experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Many restaurants operate on a first-come, first-served basis, especially during the busy summer season, so flexibility goes a long way. For those that do accept reservations, booking ahead for dinner is strongly recommended.
Breakfast is more limited in town. Sit-down breakfast options are few, with the Princess Hotel Restaurant and, seasonally, Tobermory Brewing Company typically being the only places offering a full breakfast service. Planning ahead—or grabbing breakfast supplies before arriving—can make your mornings much smoother.
The good news? Most of Tobermory’s major restaurants are within easy walking distance of Blue Bay Motel in Little Tub Harbour, including Tobermory Brewing Company and numerous harbour-front dining options—making it easy to explore your choices without ever moving your car.
Tobermory’s natural beauty comes with responsibility. The Bruce Peninsula hosts fragile ecosystems, including rare orchids. Practice Leave No Trace principles:
After reading countless reviews and talking with thousands of guests, we’ve learned that location determines your entire Tobermory experience. Consider this:
We’re rated #1 in Tobermory not because we’re fancy (we’re not), but because we’re exactly where you want to be, offering comfortable, clean rooms with everything you need and nothing you don’t. With 16 rooms plus a 3-room cottage, we provide the perfect balance of comfort and convenience.
Tobermory offers something genuinely special: the rare combination of dramatic natural beauty and small-town charm. Yes, it requires planning. Yes, summer gets crowded. But standing in the turquoise waters of the Grotto, watching the sun set over Georgian Bay, or spotting your first shipwreck through a glass-bottom boat—these moments make every bit of planning worthwhile.
Your adventure starts at Blue Bay Motel in Little Tub Harbour. We’re open April through October, and we can’t wait to welcome you.
