Cyprus Lake Campground Is Closed Through October 31, 2026 | Your Bruce Peninsula Fall & Thanksgiving Weekend Guide

If you had a fall camping trip planned at Cyprus Lake, you have probably already seen the news: Parks Canada has closed the campground through October 31, 2026. Parks Canada will continue to assess bear activity and communicate with reservation holders and the public if further closures are needed.

We know that is disappointing, especially if your plans were built around Thanksgiving weekend in Tobermory. But here is the good news: the Grotto remains open for day use, many hiking trails remain available, fall colours are part of what makes October special on the peninsula, and Tobermory is still a great place to experience the Bruce Peninsula in the fall.

Your trip does not have to be cancelled. It just needs a new home base. Here is what you need to know.

What Is Happening at Cyprus Lake?

Parks Canada closed the Cyprus Lake Campground because of increased bear activity and continues to assess the situation. The current closure runs through October 31, 2026.

If you had a campsite booked, check your email and your Parks Canada reservation account for the latest information.

The closure is intended to protect visitors and reduce the risk of further human-bear interactions. It is also an important reminder of why keeping food, garbage, and other attractants secured matters throughout the Bruce Peninsula.

What Is Still Open?

The Grotto and Indian Head Cove. The Grotto remains open for day use, with a confirmed parking reservation required through October 31. Parks Canada offers five four-hour parking time slots throughout the day. The hike to the Grotto, Indian Head Cove, and the Georgian Bay shoreline is roughly one hour round trip.

Parks Canada recommends arriving with at least two hours remaining in your parking time slot. Walking on Cyprus Lake Road is not permitted.

The first-come, first-served parking lots at the Visitor Centre and Singing Sands do not provide access to the Grotto, so do not rely on them if the Grotto is part of your plans.

Halfway Log Dump. Reservations were required through September 7. Since September 8, parking has been first-come, first-served with self-registration at the lot.

Park admission. The free admission period ended on September 7. Regular Parks Canada admission fees now apply.

Always check the Parks Canada parking information before you go. Conditions and requirements can change.

Thanksgiving Weekend in Tobermory: October 10–12, 2026

Canadian Thanksgiving is Monday, October 12, and the long weekend runs from Saturday, October 10, through Monday, October 12.

If you are planning a Thanksgiving weekend getaway to Tobermory, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Book your Grotto parking first. Parks Canada notes that weekends remain busy from May through October, so reserve your preferred time slot as early as possible.
  • Check the Chi-Cheemaun ferry schedule. The MS Chi-Cheemaun operates daily between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island through October 18, 2026. From September 8 through October 18, the off-peak schedule applies, with an additional sailing on Fridays and another additional sailing on Thanksgiving Monday, October 12. Check the latest schedule and reserve directly through the Owen Sound Transportation Company.
  • Confirm business hours. Many seasonal restaurants, shops, and tour operators adjust their hours in the fall, particularly around and after Thanksgiving. Check directly with any business on your must-do list.
  • Look at boat tours. Some Tobermory operators continue running tours into the fall. Availability and schedules vary, so check directly with each operator before planning your day.

When Will the Fall Colours Peak?

Fall colour timing changes every year and can vary across the Bruce Peninsula.

October is a beautiful time to experience fall in Tobermory, with opportunities to enjoy hiking, the Bruce Trail, Georgian Bay, limestone cliffs, and the peninsula’s changing landscape.

The best way to follow current conditions is to check the Ontario Parks Fall Colour Report as your trip gets closer.

Peak colour cannot be guaranteed for a specific weekend, so let the current conditions help you plan.

Be Bear Smart, Wherever You Stay

Black bears live on the Bruce Peninsula year-round, but they are generally active from early spring through late fall. Parks Canada advises visitors to stay alert and take precautions to reduce the risk of human-bear conflicts.

A few simple habits matter wherever you stay:

  • Never leave food, coolers, or garbage outside or in an unattended vehicle.
  • On the trails, stay alert, skip the headphones, stay on marked trails, and make noise.
  • If you see a bear, stay calm, do not run, do not approach it, and give it space and a clear way to leave.
  • Report bear activity to Parks Canada at 519-596-2233.

Keeping food and garbage properly secured helps protect both visitors and wildlife.

Why Blue Bay Motel & Azure Cottage Make a Great Swap

If you are rebuilding your Bruce Peninsula fall trip, consider making Tobermory harbour your new home baseinstead of a campsite.

Blue Bay Motel, located at 32 Bay Street in Tobermory, puts you close to the harbour, restaurants, shops, and boat tours, with free on-site parking. After a day on the trails, come back to a comfortable room, a hot shower, and exclusive access to Blue Bay Beach.

On cool October evenings, our patio heaters make it easier to enjoy some time outdoors a little longer.

Azure Cottage is our waterfront option, featuring a private beach area and a fully equipped kitchen. If cooking your own meals was part of your camping plan, you can still do that here, with more room and more comfort. It is a great option for families and groups who want their own space.

And the price is a pleasant surprise: our fall rates are nearly 40% lower than peak summer pricing, depending on your dates and accommodation.

Your Rebuilt Fall Trip Checklist

✔ Check your Cyprus Lake reservation status. Watch for Parks Canada emails about cancellations, refunds, and further updates.

✔ Book your Grotto parking. A reservation is required through October 31.

✔ Reserve your accommodation early. If you are planning a Thanksgiving weekend getaway, booking ahead is recommended.

✔ Check the Chi-Cheemaun schedule. If you are planning a trip between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island, confirm the latest 2026 sailing schedule directly with the Owen Sound Transportation Company.

✔ Confirm restaurant and tour hours. Seasonal businesses may reduce hours in the fall.

✔ Pack layers and good footwear. October weather and trail conditions can change quickly. Parks Canada specifically notes that spring and fall can be surprisingly cool, particularly along the coast.

✔ Follow the fall colour report. Peak timing varies each year.

✔ Secure your food and garbage. Everyone shares responsibility for keeping bears wild.

Your Bruce Peninsula Thanksgiving Trip Is Still On

A closed campground changes where you sleep. It does not change the turquoise water, the limestone cliffs, the Bruce Trail, or the beauty of Tobermory in October.

Stay close to the harbour, explore the Grotto, experience the fall scenery, and come back to a warm place at the end of the day.

Whether you are planning a Thanksgiving weekend getaway, a fall hiking trip, or a late-season visit to the Bruce Peninsula, Tobermory is still ready to welcome you.
